Economics Should Serve Human Beings, Not Vice-Versa

Posted on December 27, 2011

Although the "why?" generation might deceive themselves into believing that they are sick to death of hearing it, the simple truth of the matter is that life for the vast majority of people really was better before the economic take over in the 1980′s. This is not to say that the 80′s themselves were a complete disaster, just that all the subtle signs were beginning to raise their ugly head.

The economic fascists will like to tell you that they are not responsible for this downturn in living standards, that it was the rapid increase in the world's population, that the invention of new technologies brought about globalisation and undermined local industry, and so on. However, at the end of the day one only has to look at their bank balance in comparison to the general population to get the correct answer. Whichever way they might want to juggle the numbers and clothe this pseudo-science in complicated jargon, the fact is that this economic system is designed only to serve itself and the "economists" who feed it and feed upon it. In philosophy this particular kind of unsustainable argument is called a self-fulfilling prophecy; "we are the best ones to control the economy because we are rich". Yet I would think that they are the type to merely feather their own nests and therefore have already proven their unworthiness.

If we were to imagine this as a graph, then it is an infantile proportionality relation that says "Amount of money = Amount of happiness". That is, the more money you have, the happier you will be. Simple. And as the economy "grows", then more people will become rich. Eventually everyone on earth will be relatively well-off and we can all join hands and sing Kumbaya. It is sad to say but this is what your average right-winger simpleton truly believes. And to those of us who know the truth, all of those graphs on the stock exchange and the over-complicated arguments in defence of them are nothing more than a show of smoke and mirrors designed to confuse us into trusting their judgement. Indeed, if every "economist" were to spontaneously combust tomorrow, then the real economy would not only continue to exist, but it would probably *flourish*.

A far more interesting idea is the falsifiability argument given by the science philosopher Karl Popper. In *The Open Society and It's Enemies*, he states "we do not know what makes a person happy. There are many millionaires for example who are grossly unhappy. But we do know what will make a person unhappy. Someone who is starving to death will definitely be unhappy". Therefore,

THE AIM OF ECONOMICS SHOULD NOT BE TO INCREASE WEALTH BUT TO DECREASE POVERTY.

And this is precisely how we can begin to think of ways to put economics back into perspective as merely one sphere of human activity, to make it serve us and not the other way around. Here in Australia during the 70′s and 80′s, for example, universities used to be free. Since it was considered good for society for people to be educated, then the only criteria to get into uni was to finish high school and pass a test or interview. And "ironically" this was incidentally good for the economy as well because people were generally happier, could follow the path that felt natural to them, and find success in that field without having to reduce it to some ridiculous economic rationale. You could be a painter without having to work for Coca Cola. And while you probably wouldn't become rich, you wouldn't starve. It was the job of the economist to make this work, to distribute all of our resources, and to pick up the slack wherever it was needed. That was his/her job description. And it was their failure that we are now living.
